How to Answer Your Children’s Questions About Other People’s Families

What is adopted?

One of my child’s closest friends is adopted.  We talked for a long time one day after she heard this word, discussing what adoption was.  She asked a lot of difficult questions but I explained that sometimes a mommy isn’t able to do what is best for her children and that she has to be able to let her child have the best life possible which might mean that she has a second mommy and daddy who raise her and take care of her.

Learning how to talk to your child about these difficult questions makes it possible for you to be able to explain many things in life to them.  Your children will respect you when they can come to you with anything and you can answer them with grace and an easy to understand explanation.
