Browsing Pinterest for baby’s nursery inspiration, you’ve probably seen a million and one ideas. But many can be time-consuming, and as an expectant or new mom, you need a project that’s high-impact yet simple. A soft, whimsical way to add some color is with some Pom-Poms. You’ve seen them on Etsy, but have you ever thought of crafting your own? Check out this simple how-to for DIY Pom-Poms!
Decide what kind of pom-poms you want to make and how you want to use them. Do you want tulle or tissue paper? Do you want to string them like garland? Do you want to hang a few from the ceiling? A few options for this style would be using 3-5 pom-poms of the same size in different colors, 3-5 of different sizes in the same color, or 3-5 of different sizes in different colors.
Most craft stores will have all the supplies you need for this project. Consider picking a few different colors of tulle or tissue paper to go with the rest of the decor for the nursery.
1. Wrap the tulle around your book 25-30 times. The more times you wrap it, the fuller your pom-pom will be. Make sure you don’t wrap it too tightly; you want it to slide off the book easily.
2. Slide the tulle off the book. Take the string, cut to about 6″, and tie it securely in the middle of the tulle.
3. Cut each end of the tulle bundle.
Repeat steps 1-3 for each pom-pom you make. Once you’ve made as many as you need, it’s time to string them.
1. Stack 8-10 sheets of tissue paper and fold like an accordion, making the folds 1-1.5″ wide.
2. Tie string securely around the center of the folded tissue paper.
3. Cut the ends of the tissue paper. Depending on the amount you cut off and the shape of the ends, it will change the look of the pom-pom. Consider rounded or pointed ends.
Repeat steps 1-3 for each pom-pom you make. Once you’ve made as many as you need, it’s time to string them.
If you’re going to hang them from the ceiling, come up with an arrangement plan for hanging. Cut the fishing line at appropriate lengths based on your arrangement. Tie the fishing line around the string and fluff the pom-pom. Be gentle when fluffing the tissue paper to avoid any rips or tears. Use the small picture nails or push-pins to attach the fishing line to the ceiling. Repeat for as many pom-poms as you have.
If you’re going to string them like garland, cut a piece of ribbon to your desired length and add 1.5″ for each pom-pom. Tie the ribbon around the center of your pom-pom (where you secured it with the string) and fluff. Repeat for as many pom-poms as you have and hang.
After you’re finished, stand back and admire your work! The best part of any DIY project is being able to see the end result and be proud of what you created. These pom-poms can also be used as decorations at parties, showers or even weddings!
