Okay, guys…can we talk about how much July is not my month? It is not my month. It never has been. Back when my husband and I were trying to figure out when we were going to get married, July was just out and I’ve since discovered that that’s because apparently that is when moderately bad things happen to me (strangely, the very worst things seem to happen to me in October, but I love October, soooo…)
Anyway. This time around, my husband is still employed and I don’t have two (2) tooth abscesses and my water heater didn’t rust out and flood my attic and leak through my kitchen ceiling and short out my oven. But it’s July in Louisiana and my air conditioner stopped working. Died. It is no longer with us. This is both the most expensive and the most devastating incident of them all. Okay, maybe not, but it kind of feels that way right now. I would have been a really terrible human being if I had been born in an age without central heating and cooling.
Throw in the fact that Sara and I are in the final stretches of finishing our third cookbook (have we talked about that yet? Yeah, that’s happening…) and this came at a really bad time. So. Since all my energy is being poured into that and mourning the loss of my beloved AC (and sitting really, really still in my living room with the lights off because sometimes when I do that, it feels cooler), I’m doing a roundup of some of my favorite OBB cool treats and drinks.
Blueberry Cheesecake Ice Cream
This is one of the very first recipes we posted and it’s still one of my all-time favorites–it’s not summer at our house until we’ve whipped up a batch of this!
Strawberry-Watermelon Slushie
If you’ve got some watermelon or strawberries that you need to use sooner rather than later, whip up a batch of these slushies–so refreshing and delicious on a hot summer afternoon!
Italian Sodas
Italian sodas are seriously probably my favorite treat–I have kind of an embarrassing number of syrups. On hot summer nights (and not hot, not summer nights), one of our family’s favorite things is to whip up Italian sodas while we watch a movie together.
Dirty Diet Coke
If my family loves Italian Sodas, then I love to sneak away and drink a Dirty Diet Coke while my kids argue about the very most minute details of existence.
Frozen Ice Pops
Sara put together some of her favorite flavor combos in these delicious, gorgeous frozen pops–my kids (okay, me, too) love putting these together on hot summer afternoons!
Raspberry Citrus Slushie
This cool treat combines some of my favorite flavors and comes together in just a few minutes.
Caramelized Banana Ice Cream
Because caramelized bananas. And ice cream.
Kate’s Power Smoothie
This smoothie singlehandedly got me through my last pregnancy. Okay, maybe that’s a little dramatic, but I just felt so off so much of the time and this was a cure-all for all of it–morning sickness, low blood sugar, exhaustion.
Mint Limeade
One of my favorite drinks in the whole entire universe. This is what would be forever on tap in my dream house (you know, that house that has a machine that dispenses all my favorite drinks).
Virgin Sangria
Easy, refreshing, beautiful, perfect for hot summer days (and nights).
So if you guys need me, I’ll be holed away in my office, madly finishing a cookbook and sipping cold beverages! Stay cool!
